"Kreig" our night watchman

Small Animal Entrance

Then there are Riley, George and Killer who also may be seen wandering the stalls or hanging around the front counters greeting clients.  These cats are not for adoption as they have become fixtures and part of our family.  If you would like to adopt a cat or dog please check with us as we occasionally have some unclaimed animals that need loving homes.

Meet Daisy and Lily. Daisy is the sorrel pony and Lily is the spotted pony.  They are awaiting their new jobs escorting children at our Pony Parties.

Chance Ridge Veterinary Hospital was built in 1984. At our hospital we care about animals and their people. Our focus is to provide you with quality veterinary care in a modern, clean and caring environment.  Our services include wellness visits and vaccinations, dentistry, surgery, an in-house lab for blood work, radiology, ultrasound, on-site pharmacy, and microchip identification. We also provide boarding and grooming services for Companion animals. As we continue to develop our web we will showcase our staff as well as our services.  Be sure to check back often and feel free to make suggestions or comments.

W. Burton Smith DVM founded Chance Ridge Veterinary Hospital in 1984 with the combining of his Equine Practice in Valley, Nebraska and his Small Animal Practice in Omaha, Nebraska. For awhile he continued to run two Small Animal satellite clinics in Omaha but has since decided to concentrate his efforts on the main hospital. If you have questions on veterinary care  Dr. Smith can be reached at Chance Ridge Veterinary Hospital (402) 289-4400 or you can email him at burtonsmith@chanceridge.com

Extracorporeal Shock Wave Therapy

At Chance Ridge Veterinary Hospital Extracorporeal Shock Wave Therapy (ESWT) is being used successfully to relieve pain, reduce inflammation, and improve the rate of healing and tissue repair. ESWT focuses a beam of energy waves similar to ultrasound that penetrates to injured tissue.  In horses, ESWT is beneficial for tendon and ligament injuries, stress fractures and shin splints, navicular syndrome, and degenerative joint disease. Similarly, ESWT with small animals is helpful for orthopedic cases such as fractures, hip and elbow dysplasia, tendon and tendon sheath injuries.  Standard treatment recommendations for horses is 2 to 3 treatments spaced 14 –30 days apart. During each treatment session, the horse is sedated and the affected area clipped and cleaned. Two thousand radial shock waves are transmitted along a hand piece to the treatment area to stimulate the healing process. Each session lasts approximately 10-20 minutes. Following treatment, some horses experience mild swelling and sensitivity at the treatment site, which subsides within 48 hours. The majority of horses show no signs of discomfort or swelling following treatment. Since the technique is non-invasive and involves minimal restraint and sedation, there is little risk of injury to the animal. The cost of a session depends on the area being treated and amount of sedation required to complete the procedure.

If you have a horse with a chronic lameness issue that has not responded favorably to conventional medical therapy, consult with Dr. Smith to determine if your horse would be a candidate for ESWT. If you would like additional information regarding ESWT, please feel free to contact our clinic.

Equipment

We regularly update our diagnostic equipment in order to keep up with rapidly developing technology.

We have the ability to run lab tests for routine screening purposes, or if your animal is ill and we need results NOW...we're able to get quick, accurate lab results on our in-house laboratory equipment. We use the same modern technology found in human hospitals and labs. We also utilize the services of a 'outside' laboratory that picks up lab samples several times daily and faxes the results within hours.

Animal Welfare

For several years we have housed stray animals picked up by police departments of the surrounding area.  Elkhorn, Valley, Waterloo, Bennington and Yutan bring in stray animals to be held until their owners can claim them.  Most animals are claimed immediately. However, it is a great help if these animals have some sort of identification, such as tags or micro chipping.  We scan all animals for chips and do our best to find their owners.  After five days unclaimed animals are put up for adoption.  Some of the unclaimed cats have chosen to take up residency and have become greeters at the front counter.  As we develop our web we hope to be able to list strays as they come in and also list unclaimed animals for adoption.  Please check back often.

On the right is Morris.  Morris was brought in by the Elkhorn police who found him in sub zero temps on the streets about four years ago.  He was a young stray who decided he liked it here better.  He can be seen in the stall barns out back or lying on the front counter greeting clients.
